Asylum
Perhaps you have fled your country, or are planning to do so, because of an unsafe situation at your location. Possibly you have considered to ask for protection in another country. When asking for international protection, for example in The Netherlands, you ask for asylum. In fact, you ask for a residence permit. When you arrive in The Netherlands, and you turn to the authorities such as the police or the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), you will be referred to an application centre. You will be ask to register here, and you will be explained how the asylum procedure works.
Your lawyer
Before your initial interview at the IND you will speak to a lawyer. In case of no known lawyer, or if you wish to speak to another lawyer, the Kingdom of the Netherlands will provide you with one. At this day, September 19th, 2015, it is not always mandatory to pay for this yourself; the Kingdom will pay the lawyer. However, you could also choose to speak to a specific lawyer, one you know, for example one with whom you had contact before you left your country. If this lawyer is registered as an asylum law specialist, you do not have to pay for this first meeting. Of course you can ask your lawyer about this registration.
